11. ANP5: Heritage
11.1Albury Parish is an area with an extensive history dating back to the Neolithic, Anglo Saxon, Roman times and progressing with its aristocratic, religious, and industrial past. It has a very large number of Grade 1 and Grade 2 buildings and ancient monuments which is notable. Full details of these can be found in the Heritage Report APPENDIX E. Many buildings in the parish are influenced by architect Augustus Welby Pugin and include his barley twist chimneys. The parish has a thriving history society which is underfunded and under resourced.
11.2The Parish has a rich cultural heritage, but this is currently not recorded in a central or easily accessible manner. The Parish Council is requested to invest in the collation and digitisation of the history of the parish and its buildings to provide better accessibility for parishioners and visitors.
11.3The Parish Council is requested to look at ways to improve identification and accessibility of historic buildings and sites in the parish e.g. historic walks via notable historic buildings, and a “blue plaque” scheme for notable buildings and assets.
11.4Guildford Borough Council maintain a list of buildings of special local architectural or historic interest, these are non-designated heritage assets. This is known as the ‘Local List’ and currently includes over 200 buildings and structures including telephone boxes, post boxes and walls throughout the Borough1. There are currently no buildings that are Locally Listed on the Guildford Borough Council register of Locally Listed Buildings in Albury parish.
11.5It is recommended that the Parish Council considers the following for Local Listing or local Blue Plaque scheme: “Resurrection Corner” in the graveyard of the parish church of St Peter and St Paul which is the burial place of several of the Albury Apostles, and The Barn Church at Farley Green which is the only public building in Farley Green. The latter was gifted to the Parish and is an original barn converted into a church and is a regular venue for public gatherings. These sites should be compared against the SCC selection criteria https://www.surreycc.gov.uk/land-planning-and-development/heritage-and-planning/listproject/selectioncriteria.

- The Neighbourhood Plan identifies the following buildings as potential to be Locally Listed Buildings. Development proposals affecting Locally Listed Buildings should be sensitively designed to conserve and where possible enhance the significance of the building and its setting.
