8. ANP2: Conservation Areas
8.1There are two Conservation Areas in the parish one is adjacent to St Martha’s parish. The latter contains one of the former mills which has subsequently been redeveloped but there no buildings of significant Listed heritage or design. The most significant Conservation Area contains Albury village which is known for its unique Pugin designed chimneys, stone and brickwork which feature on many of the buildings. These conservation areas are identified in MAP R
8.2The historic and cultural importance of Albury village is significant. It is vital than any development acknowledges this and is sympathetic to maintaining the unique character of this Conservation Area.
8.3The parish contains a large number of Listed Buildings associated with its rural, industrial, religious and aristocratic history including: 2 Scheduled Monuments, 2 Grade I and 42 Grade II Listed structures and buildings – many of these are in Albury village and Sherbourne. An inventory of the listed buildings in the Albury village Conservation Area can be found in the Design & Heritage Report APPENDIX E.
8.4The Albury village Conservation Area has not had a formal Conservation Appraisal by Guildford Borough Council and the Albury Design Guidance and Codes (APPENDIX A) sets out to address this and preserve the unique character of the village Conservation Area until a formal CAA is undertaken. It should inform the design of any development.
Policy ANP2 – Albury Village Conservation Areas
Development proposals should preserve and enhance the historic environment, particularly the special architectural and historic significance of the designated Albury Conservation Area and its setting. Features identified as positive characteristics of the Conservation Area and its immediate setting are defined in the Albury Design Guidance and Codes attached as APPENDIX A, to which all proposals must have full regard.
Any harm to the significance of this heritage asset will require clear and convincing justification and only be permitted where allowed under the NPPF.
In the absence of a Conservation Area Appraisal guide for Albury village Conservation Area, the Albury Parish Design Guidelines and Codes APPENDIX A should be used instead.
